Rachel and Dan’s wedding at Latrobes on Royal
From New York to New Orleans and beyond, these two are definitely globe trotters!
Their story – straight from Rachel:
“Dan and I met and became instant friends in Washington D.C. while we were both working as congressional interns in the Fall of 2004. We both lived in “Washington Intern Student Housing” and most of my roommates were classmates of Dan’s at Leeds University in England. Dan lived in the house down the street but he spent most waking moments at our house. We would go for breakfast, walk around Eastern market, go tanning and throw ridiculous house parties.
Both of us were in other relationships at the time so our friendship was just platonic. After this semester in D.C. we went back to our respective homes. Mine in Fargo, North Dakota and his in Preston, England. In the following years I graduated college and went on to law school. Dan finished school and started working as a lobbyist in London. We stayed friends and kept up to date on each others lives on Facebook.
Fast forward 7 years and we both wound up working and living in New York City. As I started taking business trips to New York before my move, Dan would message me about getting together for coffee, but neither of us are very good at making and sticking to plans. We would keep each other up to date on our lives through messages and finally after I had been living in New York for a good year and a half we met up for coffee! Our amazing connection as good buds picked up right where we left off. We began getting together more often over the course of this year as we started to realize we had more in common than we originally thought. I’ve always told Dan that I wanted him in my life forever, which was a big reason I was so reluctant to actually date him as I witnessed his monthly change-over in girlfriends. We both knew, however, that our connection was different. Last year on April 1st Dan accompanied me to Fargo to visit my family. April Fool’s is my favorite day of the year and I couldn’t surpass an opportunity for an amazing prank. I created fake ultrasound pictures and bought a big fake ring and we both told our families that I was pregnant and we were getting married. To our surprise and shock our families were really excited! They were really mad when we told them it was a prank.
I dropped him off at the airport that week since he had a earlier flight back to New York and driving away I looked back at him and thought “I’m going to marry this amazing man someday.” I was right, and less than a month later he gave me a beautiful ring and a request to be a part of his life forever
The proposal is just as bizarre as our dating history. I got back in the evening from a work conference and he was really adamant about meeting me at the apartment, and asked me all day what time I would make it back there. Once I arrived home we had a completely normal evening. Ordered take-out, talked to family (where we discovered both Dan and my Grandpa were wearing the same t-shirt from Lafayette), finished a little work and went to bed. In bed, he turned to me and gave me a wooden box with a gorgeous ethically mined diamond inside. I sat there silent for about 5 minutes, which has never actually happened in my entire life and then I said thanks. He said some beautiful things about the two of us sharing a life together and then we went to sleep.
It took me about two months to fully grasp the fact that I was engaged and around that time we started to plan the wedding. We spent our first vacation together in New Orleans and although we had both been there before we immediately fell in love with the city in a new and unique way so we found it fitting that this be the setting for our wedding. ”
