We met up with Colleen and Chris at The Southern Hotel in Covington, LA for their editorial engagement portraits. The California vibe of this hotel was perfect for this stylish couple. After creating some beautiful portraits around the hotel, we intended to finish up at Fountainbleau State Park. However, the park had to close early that day due to plumbing issues. So we decided to try a nature trail across the highway from the park. None of us had ever been there, so we really didn’t know what to expect. I love new and challenging situations, and was I was thrilled when I saw what the trail had to offer. It was absolutely beautiful! It was the perfect location to include their pup, “Sam”.
How did you meet?
We met probably 5 years ago in a group setting. About 3 and a half years ago I threw a Halloween party at my house – I was a skeleton and he came dressed as Jesus (he had longer hair at the time and a beard) and it was actually kind of scary how well he pulled off that costume. That was the first night he showed an interest and about a month later we were on our first date.
Where did you go on your first date?
Dinner at Maurepas and drinks after at Tonique.
Tell us all about the proposal!
We took a ski trip to Whistler the week before Christmas and the thought that we might get engaged on the trip never even crossed my mind. I knew it was coming but Chris did a really good job of making me think it wasn’t happening until after he finished his fellowship. We usually take a ski trip once a year and we travel fairly often so the fact that we were taking a big trip was not something out of the ordinary. Chris has an interest in flying and planes and has been wanting to ride in a helicopter so he booked a helicopter tour of Whistler and the tour included a glacier landing. So we get to Whistler Thursday night, skied all day Friday, skied the morning of Saturday and then the tour was scheduled for that afternoon. Again, the thought that I might be getting engaged never even crossed my mind. I was so happy for Chris that he was finally going to get his helicopter ride! There were 2 others couples on the tour and the pilot – the ride was pretty amazing, spectacular views and it was a gorgeous afternoon. We landed on the glacier and the pilot said we had about 10 minutes to explore, take pictures, etc. Chris gave his camera to the pilot and whispered, “I’m about to propose, do you mind getting this?” We posed for the picture and I was just like hurry up its freezing!! We took the picture and then he grabbed my hand and got down on one knee. I was in complete SHOCK! All I kept saying was Chris are you serious? Are you serious?! He had to tell me to take my glove off so he could put the ring on and then I was all worried it was going to fall In the snow! The pilot had actually taken a video of the proposal so that was pretty cool – we can share it with you too! We went back to the hotel and called our family and friends and then went out to dinner and a fabulous restaurant that evening. We skied the next day and then ended the trip with a day in Vancouver. When we got back into town the following Monday my parents had dinner for us at their house and his parents, sister, and grandma came over as well. It was awesome getting engaged out of town and having the opportunity to enjoy that special time just the two of us – and then it was really great coming home to both of our families. Whistler now has a very special place in my heart!
